Artist's Comments

2.5x3.5 drawing on 90 LB watercolour paper.
Underpainting - 2 blue Prismacolor art markers and Staedtler watercolour pencils
Final - Prismacolor scholar coloured pencils
It took about 1.5 hours

I really like the way my stipple copper banded butterflyfish came out so I did a coloured one as an ACEO. Some of the fish gott messy with the underpainting but I think it still came out good.

I really like using Prismacolour art markers as an under painting! I only used the two blues I have (I also have 1 red but it wasn't used in this). They give a different effect that watercolour pencils. I am going to be getting a set of Prismacolor markers eventually, they are very expensive. That is only why I have 3.... the one blue is almost dead too.

This is for sale, please contact me if you would like it. :)

Thank you! I really like the background too. I used Prismacolor markers for the underpainting. It gave a different effect but I really like it. I want to get some more to use.

They rock. The twelve color set isn't usually too expensive and since they mix, you may be able to get by just using that. They are so convenient for underpainting!

I did my latest journal entry on a book on using markers and colored pencil together for realistic rendering -- they don't say "this is realism" but the examples in Color Drawing are very realistic, and range to impressionistic drawings.

Yes, if you get any set, plan to get at least one, maybe two grays. I bought two grays to go with my 48 color set because Prismacolor does not include grays in the sets. They do include black, which is handy. I think there may be a brown in the 12 set, but I don't know what all is in it or not so it helps to fill it out. Unlike colored pencils they do stand up to just being stored in a shoebox or zipper bag, they don't need the special treatment Prismacolor pencils do. I guess when you go to the store you'll be able to open the box and see what colors are there, then choose the ones to go with it. Good plan.

If I don't get a set right away I want to get a yellow, black and a colourless blender. I have an idea for a dragon eye ACEO with them. I have two blues and a red already that will work, I just need yellow, black and the colourless blender.

If you have a good process red and blue already, that would do you for mixing colors to start. Especially on underpaintings, precision isn't always a big deal. A pink would probably help for being able to do lighter oranges and pinks, and a very light blue would help for light greens though. Although you can lighten them after they're on by going over them with the colourless blender, it's very neat that way.
